Humane Education – Responsible Society is a project mutually conducted by Lesbian Organization Rijeka -LORI, Human rights and civic participation association „PaRiter“, SOS Rijeka – Centre for Nonviolence and Human Rights and Centre for Women’s Studies of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka. The project is worth 1.055.472,40 kuna, lasts for 21 months (from March 2018 until December 2019) and is financed by European Union from European social found. In developing the project plan and its implementation each partner’s specific expertise has been applied – LORI’s, PaRiter’s and SOS’s experience in the domain of human rights, the rights of sexual minorities and LGBTIQ domain, violence against women and gender equality and the Centre’s experience whose scientific work is based on or is about feminist and gender theories and the theory of sexuality.

Overall objective is to improve the knowledge and skills of the students of the University of Rijeka for active civic participation in the area of gender equality and related human rights in the sense of building a more humane society.

Specific objectives include:

1. Capacity building of employees of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka and CSOs in domain of human rights by providing educations for implementation of service learning method;

2. Development and implementation of service learning programs in the field of gender equality and related human rights at the University of Rijeka – Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka;

3. Development of specific knowledge and skills of students on University of Rijeka for active civic participation in the field of gender equality and related human rights;

4. Further development of service learning programs, education for human rights and active citizenship;

5. Development of partnership between 3 civil society organizations and higher education institution.

Target groups: 1. Students of the University of Rijeka, 2. Employees of the University of Rijeka, 3. Civil society organizations in Rijeka – LORI, PaRiter and SOS Rijeka, 4. employees of the University and members of the CSOs in Pula, Zadar and Osijek.

Activities in this project are reflecting on overall objective, specific objectives and target groups:

1. Education and capacity building of employees of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka and CSOs in domain of human rights

Within this project activity the professional capacity of the employees of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science in Rijeka and 3 CSOs in Rijeka will be built for the successful implementation of the service learning model. In addition, the capacity of 3 CSOs for advocating on human rights will be strengthened. This includes educational programmes for employees of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and 3 CSOs: education on the implementation of service learning programs, education for monitoring and advocacy on human rights and a study visit to the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) in the form of university co-operation and better understanding practices about implementing SL programs.

2. Development and implementation of service learning programs in the field of gender equality and related human rights at the University of Rijeka – Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka

In this project activity a new (communis) course will be established on the Department of Cultural Studies, University of Rijeka. This course will present a significant contribution as it will be the first course at the Department of Cultural Studies based on the model of service learning. The course will develop knowledge and skills on new topics – promoting gender equality and protecting human rights – which will be an important contribution to the University of Rijeka’s curriculum. The program of service learning encompasses the involvement of students in the work of civil society organizations during their studies while they can gain practical experience.

3. Further development of service learning programs, education for human rights and active citizenship

This activity includes presentation of SL programs for university employees and CSOs employees in Pula, Zadar and Osijek. Given that this is the first course of this kind of learning method (with content of human rights) this will be the opportunity to learn from examples of good practices.

Project Humane Education – Responsible Society was formed on the call for “Support to the Development of Partnerships of Civil Society Organizations and Higher Education Institutions for the Implementation of Service Learning Programs” under the Operational Program “Effective Human Resources” 2014-2020 years and is funded by European Union from European social found.
